Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has issued a report criticising the planned offer of broadcasting rights for the 2019-2022 La Liga football seasons. The process, says the CNMC, partially fails to regulate the market.
The CNMC has indicated that the draft submitted by La Liga contains several irregularities and has asked the football association to make some changes before formally initiating the process.
According to the report, the description of each package of rights is not clear enough, and may generate confusion among operators. In addition, the form that has been given out in order to assign the content blocks could allow a single television broadcaster to capture all of the most important transmission rights.
“The League must carefully study the recommendations made in the report, in order for the final version to be published is in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree-Law 5/2015 and with the regulations of for the Defense of the competition” said CNMC in a statement. The League intends to move forward with the allocation of television rights for the coming seasons over the remainder of the year.
