Spain: CNMC Appoints new Promotion of Competition Director

 |  November 7, 2017

The board of the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) has confirmed Joaquín López Vallés as the new director of the Department for the Promotion of Competition, after the departure last September of his predecessor, Antonio Maudes. Vallés is an economist who specializes in competition and economic regulation.

The area that López Vallés will lead is tasked with the “promotion of competition and efficient economic regulation through training and dissemination” as explained by the CNMC’s announcement. In it, “studies, reports on regulations, guidelines and recommendations” are prepared, in addition to proposing “the removal of barriers to effective competition within the markets.”

The new director belongs to the Commercial Technicians and State Economists Corps since 2005 and has held positions of responsibility in the Ministry of Economy, as well as in the former National Competition Commission (CNC). He has extensive experience both Spanish and European Community competition regulation and in recent years has stood out for his technical profile and excellent qualifications.
