Mexico: IFT probes TELMEX monopolistic practices

 |  May 7, 2019
Mexico’s Federal Telecommunications Institute reported the start of an investigation into probable monopolistic practices in the wholesale services market of the local network of Telmex, the main fixed telephony operator in Mexico and part of the multinational América Móvil.

The organization emphasizes that the investigation does not imply responsibility by any economic agent, since it is up to the investigating authority at the IFT to verify compliance with the LFCE. Other companies involved in this process have not been disclosed.

The process seeks to determine whether or not there are relative monopolistic practices that could unduly displace other economic agents, substantially preventing their access. Mexico is one of the countries identified as having the highest rates of media concentration in the world.
