Mexico: COFECE moving against collusion in Mexican Soccer League

 |  May 7, 2019
Mexico’s Federal Commission for Economic Competition (COFECE) has revealed new details of an investigation aimed at all teams in the professional soccer league “Liga Bancomer”, accused at the end of 2018 of anti-competitive practices in the market for “signing professional soccer players in the national territory.”

“The law allows us to visit the offices of the economic group being investigated by surprise, where the authority will obtain all kinds of evidence, both documentary and electronic. The authority is very technologically qualified, they have a very good team, to gather information and process it, regarding possible anti-competitive acts “, said Javier Nuñez, a former Commissioner.

The COFECE investigation could take up to two and a half years, since there may be up to four “Expansion Agreements”, which last 120 business days.

“Traditionally, competition commissions did not analyze labor markets, but it is already an international trend. Soccer is a very curious market, because you have workers, who are soccer players, and who at the same time are inputs for a show. The authorities began to get into these issues two years ago in the United States and now there is a guide to analyze that market, ” Nuñez explained.
