Carlos Mena Labarthe, head of the Research Unit (AIC) at Mexico’s Federal Competition regulator (COFECE), has announced his resignation. During his administration as head of the AIC, he was responsible for reaching various milestones, applying for the first time the new powers that were conferred on the regulator after reforms to the country’s Competition laws in 2013-2014.
“The plenary (of the Commission) is evaluating different profiles that could replace him … once the commissioners decide the name of the new Head, it will be announced to the public,” the Commission said.
Mr. Mena, an accomplished lawyer, has a 10-year track record in competition in Mexico, first joining the former Federal Competition Commission (CFC), from 2007 to 2013, as Director General of Investigations on Monopolistic Practices and Restrictions to Interstate Commerce, staying on with the agency’s successor, COFECE, where he served as head of the Planning and International Affairs Liaison Unit before taking on the newly-empowered AIC.
