For the European Antitrust community, the Austrian city of Innsbruck, high in the Alps and famous for winter sports, invites a different kind of memory: that of the annual symposium of the Forschungsinstitut für Wirtschaftsverfassung und Wettbewerb (a research institute, FIW for short). Following a two-year hiatus due to COVID, the FIW’s 56th meeting took place in late February 2023 . Prof. Dr. Justus Haucap was there.
An informal start included presentations and the introduction by Dr. Natalie Harsdorf-Borsch, head of the Austrian Federal Competition Authority. Other prominent authorities, including the Bundeskartellamt’s Andreas Mundt, who spoke out in favour of a privileged treatment for leniency applicants, while confirming that he certainly had some concerns with the European Commission’s interpretation of Article 22 of the EU Merger Regulation guidelines…
