A group of Chilean legislators would like to summon the national economic prosecutor (FNE) to explain the purchase of Canal del Fútbol’s (CDF) broadcasting rights by a Turner company, hoping to alleviate suspicions that indicate the company could reach monopoly status.
The FNE opened a file in March 2018 to investigate the purchase of broadcast rights. The risks detected refer to possible privileges for DirecTV and Chilevisión to the detriment of their competitors.
Marcos Ilabasa, president of the Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, called for increased transparency in operations relating to Chilean football, while his colleague André Celis said that the transfer will represent an unfair advantage for Turner over its competitors.
The deadline for the investigation will end on October 24, when the FNE must validate or reject the controversial operation.
