Biden Meets AI Experts To Talk Potential Regulation

On Tuesday, President Biden held a meeting with AI experts and researchers in San Francisco to discuss the management of risks associated with the new technology.

The president is currently in San Francisco until Wednesday and was accompanied by various individuals including Jim Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media, Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Human Technology, Joy Buolamwin, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, and Oren Etzioni, former CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence.

At the meeting, Biden expressed his anticipation for significant changes in the next decade, surpassing those of the past 50 years, with AI playing a significant role in driving this change.

“We need to manage the risks to our society, to our economy, and our national security,” he said. “I have a lot to learn and we also have a lot to discuss.

During the meeting, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) was seated next to Biden. The experts present had varying opinions on the impact of AI on jobs, children, bias and prejudice, the risks associated with lack of regulation, as well as the benefits it can provide for education and medicine if developed safely from the outset, as stated by a White House official.

The White House has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) is a priority for the president. The chief of staff, Jeff Zients, is leading the effort to develop actions on AI in the coming weeks.
